Faisalabad (also known as Lyallpur) can be described as the third most populous city in Pakistan, following Karachi in the province of Lahore. It is the second largest city in the Province of Punjab, following Lahore, and is a major industrial center. Pricewaterhouse Coopers has projected Faisalabad's GDP to be at least USD 85 billion in 2025. It is known by the name of "Manchester of Pakistan." Faisalabad is one of the major contributors to the GDP of Pakistan and contributes more than 20 percent. In the world bank's Doing Business Report of 2010, Faisalabad was ranked as the top place to conduct business in Pakistan and the second-best spot, behind Islamabad, for starting an enterprise. The surrounding countryside, irrigated through the river's lower Chenab River, produces cotton, wheat, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruits. Faisalabad is an important industrial hub with major repair yards for railways and engineering and manufacturing mills that process flour, sugar, and oil seeds. Faisalabad is an important supplier of superphosphates, silk and cotton textiles, dyes, hosiery industrial chemicals and beverages, clothing pulp and paper printing, agricultural equipment, and Ghee (clarified butter). The city also houses the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which works to observe the city's business and report its findings to the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the province government. It also houses a significant dry port.

Faisalabad hosts The University of Agriculture, Government College University, The Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, and National Textile University. Arfa Karim, who hails from Faisalabad, is the oldest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Dildar Hussain and Fateh Ali Group trace their roots in the city. 16 Teji Bachchan, the mother of Bollywood actress Amitabh Bachan, was also born in the city and lived most of her life in Lyallpur. It was also where cricketers Saeed Ajmal and Rajeez Raja began their professional careers at Faisalabad. Rai Bahadur Saudagar Mal Nagpal, the owner of one of the biggest cities' grain markets, was appointed the Royal Representative of King George V during Delhi Durbar in 1911. Sikh activists Bhagat Singh as well as Sunder Singh Lyallpuri, too, lived a large portion of their childhood in Lyallpur. Lyallpur also has its cricket team, Faisalabad Wolves, based in the stadium of Iqbal. There is also a snooker, hockey, and athletics team. They participate in international games.
